Fern goes to university and... designs a digitally printed textile collection for interiors! What a mouthful.

This was my main project for the first semester of my third year of textile design. My other two papers were a theory paper and a Wallpaper Design paper. I actually enjoyed all of my papers to a certain degree- my general opinion is that if you let it, you can turn any brief into something that works for you and your style and if not, then you learned something new! University for me has been an exercise in compromise- accepting that while I might not like the brief / my teacher / the 'theme' or even the media we have to work with, and that I may have to compromise the way I like to work, more often than not the end result is well worth it and if you work hard it'll pay off. This semester had it's ups and downs but I'm more than happy with the final collection I whacked together- exploring mapping techniques and the theme of New Zealand identity with the end use of our interiors collections intended for museum use, digitally printed onto synthetic (urgh) canvas with one main length design, three co-ordinating designs and two colourways. See below my designs in their final glory and a very tired but happy me in my playsuit that I totally didn't buy because it matched my prints...
